Understanding Project Management

Ensuring the stability and availability of resources allows projects to run smoothly and efficiently. Project managers must carry out careful planning and proper allocation of resources to ensure the smooth running of the project and achievement of the set goals. Project management is about transforming a vision into reality or in other words, it is a structured process carried out by a team to realize that vision, involving planning, organizing, controlling and supervising all aspects of a project. Project management involves identifying project objectives, resource allocation, work planning, scheduling, quality control, risk handling, and effective communication between project teams. The main goal of project management is to achieve successful project results by meeting customer needs and expectations, while maintaining stability over costs, time and required resources. By using the right practices and methodologies, project managers can optimize efficiency, increase productivity, and ensure overall project success. And to achieve this goal, the project team is expected to have basic abilities that can support the objectives of the management project, including:

  1. Time Management – Good time management skills are required to be able to effectively prioritize tasks that must be completed first and will allow one to be able to manage multiple deadlines taking into account available resources.
  2. Team Development – These skills include being able to understand the role of each team member and knowing how to utilize each individual’s strengths to encourage team success and of course knowing how to allocate resources so that project tasks can be distributed fairly and according to each member’s abilities.
  3. Problem-solving– Skills about dealing with problems or obstacles that arise by remaining calm and helping the team find solutions, can help and provide energy between teams in developing approaches to problems or obstacles to the project.
  4. Communication– Communication skills are very important as project managers must be able to communicate between team members and talk openly about everything related to the progress of the project, be able to be invited to discuss and accept criticism and suggestions received. This skill is very important when responsible for conveying information to internal or external stakeholders.
  5. Attention to detail – This skill is related to ensuring that the project can be completed on time and within budget. It is necessary to be detail oriented towards the schedule, budget and planning because inaccuracy will cause the project to go off the predetermined path.
  6. Critical Thinking –Critical thinking skills can help to learn to anticipate the team’s needs and find ways to make processes more efficient so everyone can focus on the task at hand. This skill is related to rational decision making.

There are still several basic skills that project managers need to master apart from the six skills that have been explained.
