Cloud infrastructure is a computer system that is available on demand, including resources such as data storage, servers, networks, visualization software, and management tools. It consists of hardware and software that supports the delivery of cloud models and services to consumers.
Companies usually rent this infrastructure from third-party vendors. This is often preferred over building their own IT infrastructure. In addition, it also has an abstraction layer. According to TechTarget, this layer virtualizes and logically provides resources and services to users through APIs and graphical interfaces.
Basic Elements of Infrastructure
The infrastructure base of this technology consists of several back-end technology elements, each of which has a specific role in meeting the needs of the company using the technology. These include:
1. Server
A device programmed to provide services to customers. For example, a web server serves HTML files using the HTTP protocol. Servers can be used in different ways depending on their deployment model. In a managed private cloud, users can choose to store data on dedicated servers. While in a public cloud, users can use a multi-tenant model where the same server is used for multiple customers.
2. Network
Third-party providers must build and maintain infrastructure because the cloud is delivered over the internet. This infrastructure requires high bandwidth so ongoing maintenance is essential to ensure a smooth connection.
3. Storage
Instead of building an on-premises data center, cloud storage allows customers to store and manage their data in off-premises servers. They can then access the stored data over the internet and integrate data sources with other applications used in the same cloud.
The Important Role of Cloud Infrastructure in the Cloud
Cloud infrastructure plays an important role in the cloud because it is the foundation for the cloud which consists of a collection of components and elements needed. This includes computing, networking, storage, and interfaces to access virtual resources. Cloud infrastructure supports the cloud by separating functions and features from hardware and software components. Cloud service providers host virtual resources and deliver them to users via the internet or network. This infrastructure is available in three main cloud deployment models such as Public Cloud, Private Cloud, and Hybrid Cloud. Public Cloud is shared between user companies through a multi-tenant environment and is managed by a third-party provider. Private Cloud can only be accessed by one user company and can be customized according to their needs.
