Bit is short for &#8220;<em>binary digit,&#8221;<\/em> which means binary digit. <\/li>\n<li>Symbol: represented by the lowercase letter &#8216;b&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Value: has only two values, namely 0 or 1.<\/li>\n<li>Used to represent information in computer systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Byte:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Definition: a unit of data consisting of 8 bits. Byte is the basic unit used to store digital information. <\/li>\n<li>Symbol: represented by the capital letter &#8216;B&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Value: can store 256 different values (2^8), from 0 to 255.<\/li>\n<li>Unit of Measure: more often used as a unit of measure for data. For example, when we say a file is 1 megabyte (MB), it means that the file consists of 1,048,576 bytes. <\/li>\n<li>Data Representation: With 8 bits, we can represent 256 different values. This allows us to represent characters, numbers, and even colors in various combinations. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h2><strong>Key Differences<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Size:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>One byte consists of 8 bits. Thus, 1 byte = 8 bits. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bit: <\/strong>Used to measure the speed of data transfer, such as in an internet connection. For example, internet speed is often measured in megabits per second (Mbps). <\/li>\n<li><strong>Byte: <\/strong>Used to measure data storage capacity, such as file size or memory capacity. The binary system only recognizes two numbers, namely 0 and 1. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why use base 2?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Computers work with electricity: <\/strong>The circuits in a computer work with the flow of electricity. The presence or absence of electric current can be represented by 0 (no current) and 1 (current). <\/li>\n<li><strong>Efficiency: T<\/strong>he binary system is very efficient for performing the logical operations that are the basis of all computer calculations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Calculation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1 Kilobyte (KB) = 2^10 = 1.024 byte.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>^ (exponent) indicates exponentiation.<\/li>\n<li>So, 1 KB is actually a little bit bigger than 1,000 B.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 Megabyte (MB) = 2^20 = 1.024 KB * 1.024 = 1.048.576 byte.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In other words, 1 MB is 1,024 times 1 KB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why must it be powers of 10 and 20?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prefix kilo:<\/strong> In the metric system, kilo represents 1,000. However, in the binary system, kilo is represented by 2^10 or 1,024. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Mega prefix:<\/strong> Mega represents 1,000,000 in the metric system. In the binary system, mega is represented by 2^20 or 1,048.57.6. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>So, the conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because computers use a binary system, storage capacity calculations use powers of 2.
